18 Feb We Like: The humble animated gif

If there was ever a file format that you’d expect to have died quietly many moons ago it would be the humble animated gif. Limited colours, clunky animations and some horrendous banner ads deliberately designed to be as distracting as possible meant they fell out of favour for quite a while. However, with the vilification of Flash and CSS3 & HTML 5 animations not yet fully supported, they seem to have found their own little niche.

There are also some very nice examples of Animated Gifs being used by image makers from Cimeagraphs to Illustrators. The Gif was 25th years old in 2012 and if you’re not familiar with it’s history take a look at this charming video from Smartwater.
